About
Meet Jay
Pastor, teacher, writer and companion in the strange business of being human.

I’m Jay.
I’m still learning to notice.
For most of my life I’ve been a pastor, teacher and companion to people trying to make sense of God, themselves and the strange business of being human.
I served for 23 years as a senior pastor and have also worked as a chaplain and coach. Along the way I’ve been present for birth, death, doubt, burnout, beauty and more than a few moments no one could have planned.
My teachers have included Scripture and theologians, but also gardens, grief, marriage, children, old houses, strangers, songs, meals, mistakes, dogs, and places I didn’t know were teaching me at the time.
I believe that our stories are among the places God teaches us to see. The moments we overlook—beautiful, ridiculous, painful, ordinary—can become windows into the larger Story God is telling.
That conviction now gathers together the work I do through storytelling, teaching, books, and soul care. I’m still learning, still laughing, and still convinced that grace has a habit of showing up in places we nearly missed.
